Vision Statement

The aim of the Food Technology curriculum is to provide a basic and broad knowledge of cooking for the whole family. Students should be able to follow instructions and/or a recipe, to use a variety of skills, to enable them to produce dishes for wholesome balanced diets and celebrations.

Food at Weatherfield Academy

In Key Stages 2 and 3, the areas of the curriculum are linked to the creative curriculum themes that are taught across all subjects. It is a practical based course, allowing the students plenty of opportunity to try out, learn and develop their personal cooking skills.


Students are expected to reflect on their work and the work of others to establish how improvements could be made. Alongside the practical aspects, the underpinning theory related to the topics are dealt with to enhance and further develop their knowledge.

Areas in KS3 to be covered in 2015-16 include:


  • Where food comes from around the world

  • Carbon footprints

  • Farm to fork

  • Fish - types, river v  sea, cooking techniques

  • Foods/recipes/traditions from different nations and cultures

  • How food changes by cooking and preparing

  • The Eatwell plate, nutrition and a healthy diet

  • Unusual food exploring and tasting

  • Using the senses to  aid enjoyment of eating different foods


In Key Stage 4, Food Technology is an option and students can select to take the subject for two years. Students follow the Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills Level 1 course. This course has been developed to give learners the opportunity to develop:


  • the knowledge, understanding and confidence to cook meals at home

  • an understanding of how to economise when planning a meal

  • an ability to transfer skills learned to different recipes

  • an ability to inspire others by transferring that knowledge.
